When it comes to athletic performance, spectators and novices watch the athletes with a detached amazement. "How did they do that?" is a common question fans (and even participants) will ask. When it comes to athletics, there is no magic. All sports techniques and motions are based on science and physics. There is no mysticism mumbo jumbo that comprises the core of any sport, and golf is no different.
So how do some golfers develop such an amazing golf swing? What exists at the core of that swing that makes the ball go flying a zillion yards? Again, the answer lies in science and physics. The physics of the golf swing is comprised of a few basic body mechanics that anyone can learn.
The Physics of the Golf Swing
The physics of the golf swing are not mere arm strength! Yes, the golfer uses his or her arms to swing the club, but the true force that slams the ball into the next zip code comes from the hips and the delivery of body weight. As is also true in swinging a baseball bat and delivering a punch in boxing, when one uses only arm strength, he or she is leaving their body weight behind and not effectively delivering the mass required to send the ball flying.
Technique, Not Strength
Putting your body behind the golf swing does not mean 'smashing or crushing' the ball with brute strength. It means proper arms, hips, legs, and total body alignment with proper technique (precision in motion) in order to maximize the impact of the club hitting the ball. It is human nature in sporting endeavors to try to muscle through a technique. When trying to master the physics of the golf swing, this type of muscling will be totally counter productive on every level! So what are the proper components of the physics of the golf swing?
The Body Mechanics That Make For Proper Delivery Are...
Elbow, hip, and leg positioning are the components that make up the proper delivery system and the true core of the physics of the golf swing. Prior to the swing, elbows must stay close to the body prior to swinging (when an elbow is away from the body, your arm begins to lose its ability to deliver anything with real strength behind it) and weight should be on the back foot. When the golf swing "launches," the weight shifts forward, the hips will torque and the elbows will 'shoot' away from the body. Important point: do not stop at the point of contact! The swing must go THROUGH the ball! Total hip torque must be utilized to drive the club through the ball. This will send it flying and is the true formula for the physics of the golf swing.
